It really is. As an extra super bonus we have a girl in our class who keeps talking about "normal people" aka those who aren't deaf. I lost count of how many times I wanted to punch her in the face.
Yeah, that's what people eventually do here, they learn the language because it's pretty much the only way to communicate with anyone, but it's shit to have to start learning it at 18 or older. But, some of them spent their whole lives learning how Sign language sucks and is embarrassing and they refuse to learn it even later :/
Yeah, every country in Europe has a different Sign language. It's just how they developed, within deaf communities. Part of the fault is that it wasn't (isn't) recognized as a language for a long time in many countries so it didn't have time to become "uniformed". But apparently there is an "International" Sign language which they use in conferences and such.
