Exactly! And I'm TOO LAZY to look, but I'm sure their first letter was something like "we're leaving the band" bla bla, not "the band is over bla bla" so, yeah, no :)
On the other hand I do believe there were misunderstandings, but I find it hard to believe the label (and Pete) would let them go without sitting them down at least once and having them talk it over. This band wasn't an independent-of-the-universe entity. But then, I don't really know how these things work.
